LASIK Eye Surgery Eligibility

Not everyone is a candidate for LASIK eye surgery. The key to successful vision correction is finding the treatment that works best for your eyes, your goals, and your lifestyle.

You may be a suitable candidate for LASIK surgery if:

  • You’re 18 or older with a stable vision prescription.
  • You’re in good general health with no major eye diseases.
  • You’re nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism.
  • You’re looking for more freedom from glasses or contact lenses.

During your consultation at our Fort Worth eye clinic, we’ll perform advanced testing to evaluate your cornea’s shape, thickness, and health. Based on those results, Dr. Richard Chu will recommend the safest and most effective option for your eyes.

LASIK Surgery at Chu Eye Institute

We offer Wavefront-Guided IntraLASIK surgery, an advanced form of laser vision correction designed to deliver sharper, more precise results.

This technology uses a 3D map of your eye to measure the smallest imperfections in your visual system. That data is then used to program the laser, allowing Dr. Chu to correct not just your basic prescription, but also the subtle distortions that traditional LASIK may miss.

Because this procedure is bladeless and flap-based, recovery is typically quick. Most patients return to their regular routines within 24 to 48 hours and enjoy immediate improvements in vision.

What If I’m Not a LASIK Candidate?

Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK, but that doesn’t mean you are out of options. Our Fort Worth refractive surgeon offers two highly effective alternatives that deliver the same life-changing results: PRK and EVO ICL.

Understanding PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)

PRK is a time-tested laser vision correction procedure that offers the same long-term visual outcomes as LASIK, but with a slightly different healing process.

Unlike LASIK, PRK doesn’t involve creating a flap in the cornea. Instead, the surface layer of the cornea is gently removed before applying the laser. This makes PRK a better option for patients with thin corneas, dry eyes, or jobs and hobbies that carry a risk of eye trauma.

PRK takes longer to heal, but the results are just as sharp and reliable. If you’re not a candidate for LASIK, you still have a trusted path forward. Dr. Chu will walk you through every detail and help you decide whether PRK is the best fit for your long-term vision goals.

EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer® Lens) works like a permanent contact lens that’s placed inside your eye. It’s invisible, maintenance-free, and provides clear, stable vision for patients who aren’t eligible for laser-based procedures.

Unlike LASIK or PRK, the EVO ICL doesn’t reshape the cornea. It simply adds a customized lens that corrects nearsightedness (with or without astigmatism) from within the eye.

The procedure is quick, reversible, and delivers sharp, lasting results, without the dryness or long recovery associated with some other methods. Dr. Richard Chu will walk you through the process, explain how ICL fits into your vision goals, and ensure you fully understand your options.
